Adjacent to re-constructed Mechanics Institute (Main Street), WALHALLA VIC 3825 - Property No B1293

A branch of the Bank was opened on 1865 and a permanent building was constructed in 1868. Fire in November 1888 destroyed this original building and it was rebuilt by contractor E. Dunham to the design of the architect W.S. Law. The vault/strongroom was erected at this time and consisted of English bond brickwork and a basalt floor. Was the original Bank of Victoria which opened in 1863. Built between 1858-1860 the attractive building has double doors opening onto a wooden railed balcony. French windows opened onto a brick paved, vine covered verandah at the rear. The front office featured a large cedar counter. The building was erected in 1867 for the Bank of Victoria and replaced a large stone bank erected on the site in 1857 and destroyed by fire. The two storey brick structure has rendered facades. The Bank of Victoria commenced business in Belfast in 1853 and constructed this building in 1869. The architects were Smith and Watts and it was used as a bank until the 2nd World War. The picket fence to the Prince Street frontage is a particularly interesting example.
