The original house was built by Charles Carter c 1856 and is still owned by the Carter family. The symmetrical and gabled rooms at each end of the front verandah were demolished in 1958. Another house of unknown but later date has had various alterations and additions in 1890 and 1913. The woolshed was built about 1885 but was moved to its present position in 1903. This building comprises the remains of the quite extensive wharf warehouses constructed by Belfast & Koroit Steam Navigation Company on the banks of the River Moyne. The stone building housing the aquarium was built c.1849 for Alison & Knight flour millers & prominent businessmen and landowners in the early years of Port Fairy.
