The pastoral property "Meningoort" was established in 1842 following division of a larger Western District grazing run earlier leased in 1837 by pioneer settlers Peter McArthur and Nicholas Cole. McArthur built a substantial stone house and outbuildings in 1851 and in 1886 Melbourne architect Charles D'Ebro integrated the original residence into a large Italianate style homestead constructed of ubiquitous basalt with encircling iron verandah.
