445 Elizabeth Street,, MELBOURNE VIC 3000 - Property No B0120 |
Built in 1858 for William Mortimer by Samuel Cliff of Collingwood, the three-storey Royal Saxon Hotel is of significance as one of Melbourne's earliest surviving and continuously occupied hotels. It is one of only two 1850s hotels within central Melbourne to have survived with a relatively original exterior. Of bluestone and brick construction, this three-storey Victorian Regency style hotel building has an elegantly simple and symmetrical composition. A rare and distinctive ... more |

The original licensee was Thomas Stephens when the hotel was erected in 1869. The use of the building as a hotel terminated probably in 1879, however the licence was not suspended until 1919. The two storey brick structure is rendered on the street facades and has a hipped and slated roof. The hotel is notable in the social history and development of the inner suburbs. This particular example with its chamfered composition and simple mouldings is typical. It is designed in the ... more |

The Victoria Hotel, designed by Richard Speight, and completed in 1887, is architecturally and historically significant at the State level. Criterion Hotel
22 Piper Street,, KYNETON VIC 3444 - Property No B0636 |
From some early, but incomplete records, it is believed that this hotel was built by James Thompson and was opened in May 1852 by John Fahey as the Diggers Arms Hotel. By 1859 it had become the Criterion Hotel with Frederick Fitzgerald as the owner/occupier. The Wedgewood family who became the owners in the 1870s, made substantial alterations and additions in the 1890s and the building was then called the Wedgewood Hotel, and later the Royal George Hotel. The brick part of the ... more |
