'Hollydale' was built in 1898 by J.G. King for his brother-in-law, John W. Grubb. Grubb was a butcher who had arrived in Victoria from England in 1870 and had set up residence in Williamstown. The timber for the house came from the old home at Williamstown and was delivered by bullock wagon. The house was surrounded by extensive gardens, which included a conservatory and a lake.
