Tenders were called in November 1850 for this very early example of a semi-detached two storey pair of houses, which were designed by the architects Surplice and Sons in a conservative classical style in ashlar freestone, and erected in 1851-52. This symmetrical pair of houses shares an arcaded portico and there is a central first floor triple arched window. The interior has a number of early features intact. This is a statue of Adam Lindsay Gordon, an eminent and colourful poet and horseman who had made Australia his home. The work is by Paul Montford, a respected sculptor who also had settled in Australia. It was created in 1930?1931, some 60 years after Gordon's death, the money being raised by public subscription.
