Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The former Toora School Residence, designed by the Public Works Department and constructed in 1914, at 38 Welshpool Road, Toora is significant. It is a Federation dwelling based on a single corrugated hip roof with a projecting gable set off centre and a contiguous verandah at a lower pitch that covers the wider section of the facade. The projecting gable end is roughcast with battened decorations, while the square verandah has single frets. The house has multi-pane double hung windows with a bracketed window hood on the projecting gable, and the roof features a large brick chimney with moulded brick bands. 
Non-original alterations and additions are not significant.
How is it significant?
The former Toora School Residence is of local historic and representative significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, it is associated with the development of Toora in the early twentieth century, which resulted in the need for a permanent teacher's residence to serve the growing school. It demonstrates the practice by the Education Department of providing staff accommodation in rural areas. (Criterion A) 
It is significant as a representative example of the detached residences constructed for the Education Department in the early twentieth century. It is notable for the high degree of integrity when compared to similar examples in the Shire. (Criterion D)
