Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The Kongwak Public Hall as constructed in 1898 with additions in 1927 and 1956, at 1440 Korumburra-Wonthaggi Road, Kongwak, is significant. It is a Carpenter Gothic church , which reflects the two building stages in 1898 and 1963. It is a single storey longitudinal gabled building with a rear transverse gable and skillion. The 1956 brick front addition has rendered walls divided into bays by pilasters and a simple parapet with an implied string course, with tall windows on either side of the central entry. Alterations and additions made after 1956 are not significant .
How is it significant?
The Kongwak Public Hall is of local historic and social significance to South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, it is one of the oldest buildings in Kongwak and is associated with the formation of the town and district in the late nineteenth century. The alterations and additions demonstrate how the building was extended to meet the needs of the community as the township grew in the twentieth century. (Criterion A) It has social significance for strong and enduring associations with the Kongwak community through its continuous use as a public hall for over 120 years. (Criterion G)
