Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The house known as 'Four Winds', at 120 Stevens Road, Kardella, built c. 1890-1900, is significant. This late Victorian cottage has a transverse gable roof with a straight roofed verandah and a central door flanked by single windows.
Non-original alterations and additions, including the second dwelling area added onto this cottage, are not of heritage significance.
How is it significant?
The Village Settlement cottage of 'Four Winds' is of local historic significance to the South Gippsland Shire community.
Why is it significant?
Historically, this building is believed to be the only surviving dwelling from the Kardella Village Settlement, established in 1893 and would have been owned by one of the 49 settlers that lived in the Kardella Village Settlement. It is a locally rare example of the Village Settlement system and stands as a testament to the way Kardella, and the surrounds, were established. (Criterion A)
