These two Populus nigra var. italica were planted as part of a war memorial soon after World War II. They are planted in a prominent location in the town and have an historical connection with the early development of Mt Beauty as a community.
Mt Beauty was a "company" town built by the Victoria State Electricity Commission for its employees who developed and managed the Kiewa and Bogong hydroelectricity power stations
