Statement of Significance

Rare or localised
Outstanding aesthetic significance
Outstanding example of species

The land was settled in the 1920s by the WIlliams family who operated a nursery until the 1960s. The nursery was operating at its peak in the 1950s and was purchased by the State Government in 1984. The site has many fine exotic and rare or uncommon trees. This tree is a fine mature specimen of Magnolia campbellii which produces spectacular pink flowers in Autumn. The treerarely produces flowers until 20-25 years old. It has formed 2 large branches just above ground level and has grown into a wide spreading tree. Another, slightly larger example of the species, occurs at 'Alton', Mt Macedon, (1.97x16.2x14.5). No other large trees apart from these two are known in Victoria. The species also grows at Pirianda Rhododendron Garden and the cultivar "Hodginsii' at the Royal Botanic Gardens. The tree is in good condition, with little dead wood but would benefit from the removal of competing seedlings ad shrubs beneath the canopy.
