The tree was planted in 1842 by Kate Wills, daughter the owner of "Lucerne Farm'. The owner,Thomas Wills, a magistrate, was one of the leaders in the fight for separation of Victoria from NSW. The original mansion of brick and bluestone was built around 1841 and a lavish English style garden was established around it. The acorn for this tree was brought back from NSW and a 1920's publication described the tree as being the oldest and largest in Victoria. The mansion was demolished in 1960 for the present clubhouse.
The tree is located on the Latrobe Golf Club, between 8th and 13th tees
