Statement of Significance

Contribution to the landscape.
Particularly old and venerable

A very old gnarled specimen growing at the rear of the Wesley Church in Lonsdale Street. The tree has developed a very large single trunk and is absent of any side branches for the first 2.5 metres. Its exact origins are a little obscure as some records claim the seed of the treewas brought from Jerusalem by one of the Church founders circa 1839 whilst others say it was planted later in 1875 by Mr Mars Miller, a long-serving lay preacher of Wesley Church. It is amongst the olderst exotic trees in Victoria. It was moved 25 metres in 1988
