An outstanding avenue of 36 plane trees which focus on the historic Royal Exhibition Building and fountain. The trees are an important planting in the Gardens, running along either side of a North-South pathway. The planting forms one of the most spectacular avenues in Victoria. The Carlton Gardens were originally set out in the 1860s and the avenue was planted by the Trustees between 1878-1880 when the Exhibition Buildings and main fountain were also constructed.
