Grown from seeds taken from the battlefields of Gallipoli. The battle was named after a small tree that clung tenaciously to life but was finally destroyed. An Anzac picked up one of the cones and brought it back where it found its way to Victoria. In 1928, the soldier's aunt germinated the seeds.One small tree was accepted by the Shrine Trustees when the memorial was completed. World War I Plaque reads: "In remembrance of Former Comrades of the 24th Battalion A.I.F".
It was planted 11 June 1933.
The tree died of disease and was removed on 22 August 2012
