The 'Lion's Head Tree' on the Tennyson Lawn is the other remnant River Red Gum (with the Separation Tree) in that part of the Gardens and is estimated to be between 300 and 400 years old. It certainly predates European settlement.
Its unusual name refers to the shape of an ancient and large gall which has formed on the side of the trunk, presumably in response to insect attack. This is now decaying.
