Aesthetic value

An attractive stand of trees located in the business sector of Colac and to one side of Princes Highway(Murray Street). The park was reserved in 1873 and was known for many years as Market Square, renamed Memorial Square after World War 1. Originally the boundaries were planted with Pinus radiata and used to accommodate horses and vehicles. The present elm trees are thought to have been planted in the early 1900s.
The planting is unusual in Victoria and of considerable historic importance (38 + 16 trees).
Some recent tree works and planting are inappropriate to the area.
