Statement of Significance

Contribution to the landscape.
Rare and localised

This fine, wide-spreading tree is rare in cultivation in Victoria. The only other known example occurs at 'Alton', Mt Macedon. A native of the Canary Islands, the species is distinguished by its larger leaves and ovoid fruit rather than the round fruit found in the common Laurus nobilis. The tree is a significant driveway planting and is part of the collection developed by Sir James Munro (Premier of Victoria 1890-92). He purchased St Fillans in the 1880s and the planting is thought to be from this period. He sold the property in 1903.
The tree is located halfway along the drive on the north side.
