Outstanding example of species

An outstanding example which has developed a large trunk, it is the largest known in cultivation in Victoria. This form, which has flatter branchlets, is uncommon in Victoria. Another example occurs at the entrance to Walhalla Cemetery. A smaller tree, possibly a seedling, occurs to the south of the subject tree. Part of the impressive conifer collection developed from the 1880s by Sir James Munro (Premier of Victoria 1890-92).
St Fillans was purchased by Sir James Munro in the late 1880s and the planting is thought to be from this period. He sold the property in 1903.
