Why is it significant?
Contribution to the landscape Rare or localised Outstanding size Outstanding example of species An outstanding example of the species which is rare in cultivation and occurs in two very small regions near Los Angeles, California. The tree is in a fair condition and is the largest of its type in Victoria. Other examples are known in Geelong, Bendigo, Malmsbury, Skipton, Hamilton and Hoddles Creek. All the trees are of a similar age and were presumably introduced into Victoria by Mueller as part of his acclimatization experiments. The pine collection on the western side of the garden demonstrates an early site development which was advanced under the patronage of von Mueller. The tree remains largely intact although over-mature and is today a rare tree not just in Victoria but across the globe.
