Curious growth form
An attractive River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) in good condition growing amongst a large stand dominating the landscape of Bundoora Park. The tree contains a natural graft, forming a loop between two separate branch systems, approximately 11 metres above the ground. A study by Schleiger & George (1984) hypothesised that a branch grew down and abutted an upwardly directed limb. After initial rubbing to expose the sapwood, the two limbs gradually united. The physical contribution of the graft loop was to strengthen the tree in the strongest upwind direction.
The tree is located in Bundoora Park, east of the carpark/toilet area
