Statement of Significance

Yan Yean Reservoir and its surrounds are of State Significance for:

Historical features associated with early water supply schemes, including the original dam wall, bluestone aqueduct and outlet tower. There is also one heritage listed building, Bears Castle, plus an early masonry section in the reservoir caretaker's cottage, now the visitor centre.

The biological value of the catchment which includes two designated Botanical Reference Areas and their surrounding management zones, plus several plant species designated rare in Victoria and a population of the Eastern Grey Kangaroo.

It is of Local Significance for:
Recreational value as a public open space within a short distance of Melbourne, having fine mature trees and outstanding views in to the closed catchment on the flanks of the Sherwin Range.
