The coastline south and west of Portland is made up of a series of rugged headlands including Cape Bridgewater, Cape Nelson and Cape Sir William Grant, and the immediate hinterland behind these spectacular promontories. Between the Capes, with their rugged cliffs, in places over 100 metres high, are broad sandy beaches and dunes. All along the coast are features of special interest:- shore platforms, pebble beaches, caves, blowholes, a petrified forest, a number of large aboriginal middens. The hinterland is largely cleared but has many patches of remnant vegetation. Of particular interst are the coastal heathlands and the stands of Soap Mallee (Eucalyptus diversifolia). This tree is not found anywhere else in Victoria. The area has a rich cultural background. Relics indicate a significant occupation by aboriginals. The area was also the site of the landing of Captain Dutton, Portland and Victoria's first permanent white settler and significantly, this is one of the few such important sites to remain largely in its original state. There are many historic buildings throughout the ara which tell the story of European settlement. Geologically, the three promontories are partly composed of the remains of three ancient volcanic craters. As well as forming outstanding scenery they also provide an excellent demonstration of the geological processes and stages of development of the landscape. Sweeping vistas are obtained fromseveral positions alongs thecoastline giving the area very exciting visual qualities. As yet adverse visual intrusions in the area are minimal. The area of is exceptional landscape quality and has great recreational potential. Classified 02/1979
