The Silvan-Olinda Forest is of high significance within both the Dandenong Ranges and the Melbourne region due to its outstanding beauty which attracts a large number of visitors each year. The area is made up of high plains, foothills and creek valleys to the east and north-east of the main ridge area. Several areas within this forest contain important botanical sites which are worthy of recognition and protection. The landscape is covered with wet scherophyll forest, which includes a diverse range of distinct vegetation communities. Silvan Reservoir rests in a natural shallow basin on the high plains, 412 ft. above sea level. LOCATION: The area is located to the east and north-east of the Dandenong Ranges and includes the Silvan Reservoir and Catchment, Olinda State Forest but excludes the R. J. Hamer Forest Arboretum. The area covers approximately 2,200 hectares. Classified: 02/03/1981
