Cranlana, developed by businessman and philanthropist Sidney and his wife Merlyn Myer in 1921-34 and maintained by the Myer family since that period, is of State significance:
- for its sunken formal garden designed by noted architect Harold Desbrowe Annear, attributes include the stone walling and balustrades (outstanding examples), statuary, fountains, pool, seats, paths, well maintained turf, formal plantings, driveway and formal entrance gates;
- for its ability to demonstrate the lifestyle of one of Melbourne's best known families, especially known for their major department stores, philanthropic gestures and support of the arts;
- for the retention of a residence and large grounds which exemplify the city mansion development; of all Melbourne suburbs demonstrating this type of development, Toorak is arguably the most representative;
- for its fine entry gates designed by Annear and wrought by Caslake's, the premier Melbourne founders of the inter-war period.
