Statement of Significance

A significant area of the nineteenth certury housing that represents the variety of types and standards common to the period, still largely intact, with little demolition and alteration of character and in a state of progressive renovation. Of particualr note is the fine and varied collection of cast iron ornament found within the area. Every significant style of building during this period is represented, with a strong concentration of pre 1900 building and the houses themselves constitute a visual history of architecture, while the cast iron trim is a ready made museum of iron. The buildings themselves are remarkable and unspoiled, and many are beautifully restored; the social structure indicates that restoration rather than destruction is likely to continue.
