Statement of Significance

The property was originally settled as a sheep run in the 1840's. The property passed into the hands of the Gibson brothers and their brother-in-law, Fredrick Fenton in 1848. Gold was discovered on the property in 1851, by which time Fredrick Fenton had become the sole owner. This was the first discovery of gold in the Bendigo District.

Controversy surrounds the date of the building of the homestead. Some sources state 1857, however, as ads in the local paper for the sale of the property in 1867 describe the homestead as being recently built whereas earlier ads make no mention of a house at all, 1867 is the more likely date of construction. The house was sold by Fenton in 1869 and later additions to the homestead were made in the 1890's. The actual architect of the homestead is unknown.

The homestead is significant for its distinctive face brickwork and detailing as well as its unusual side wing.
