The designer has very elegantly solved the problem of coupling the pelton wheel (essentially a low torque high speed uni-directional device) to the winch drum (a bi-directional divice requiring high torque at low speeds) by means of epicyclic gearing. This maintains the respective input and output shafts parallel and allows the housing to be extremely compact. The arrangement also has the advantage that the winch may be operated with the wheel locked or the wheel may be run up to speed before the winch brake is released. Provision has been made in the housing to insert the nozzle (directing the jet of water onto the wheel) into either of two positions so that the wheel motion may be in either direction as desired.
