Statement of Significance

The Hermitage Station was established by David Reid who was a pioneer of this area. Reid commenced construction of the present homestead in 1852. It is situated on a gentle hill overlooking the surrounding plains and is constructed of local granite. It comprises a basement, principal floor and attic and is composed of a long gabled structure with a timber verandah across the main facade. There are several outbuildings, all constructed in stone. This is a fine example of homestead design and dates from early times. The association of The Hermitage with David Reid is most important. Reid was one of the first settlers in the area, he established the first mill in the area and played an important role in the discovery of gold at Beechworth. The homestead is typically composed and delightfully situated, the local stone materials, original decoration on the verandahs and unusual dormer windows are notable features. The stone outbuildings are also significance. The homestead is intact and in a good state of repair.
