Statement of Significance

An unusually substantial immigrants' depot built 1857-8 and very little used for its intended purpose, but a significant reminder of the importance of govermnent-sponsored immigration in providing labour for the development of Gippsland, and of the relationship of the former government town of Palmerston to the private settlement of Port Albert.
