Statement of Significance

The National Bank of Australasia opened its first branch in Maffra in December 1872. In August 1877 architects Terry & Oakden advertised tenders for construction of the existing single storey bank and residence with Briagalong sandstone walls in rusticated courses, arched windows and doors and hipped roof of corrugated iron.
The National Bank at Maffra is a well proportioned and simply detailed classical style bank building, and typical of bank architecture in Victorian country towns of the 1870s. It is an important 19th century element in the townscape of this Gippsland settlement.
The facade and front rooms containing the banking chamber and offices are intact. The sandstone has been painted and the residential wing periodically extended and modified.
