Statement of Significance

The original sandstone school was designed by Nathaniel Billing of Warrnambool and the original drawing is dated December 1st, 1855. These plans show teachers' quarters which consisted of a living room and a bedroom which were attached to two classrooms, and these classrooms, one for boys and one for girls, each had their own entrance.
Various alterations and additions have been made over the years, including major renovation work due to the 1903 earthquake.
This school, which was opened as a National School on December 22nd, 1856, provided initial education for John Murray who was Premier of Victoria from January 1909 to May 1912.
The original 1856 building and the north-east classroom of 1877 are included in the Classification. The later additions are not included.
