Statement of Significance

Ingleby pastoral station near Winchelsea was established by pioneer George Armytage in 1842. The present two storey bluestone homestead of 1860, which replaced an earlier stone house now in ruins, was designed by architect Edward Prowse. In 1882-83 A T Moran, architect, designed the woolshed and related station buildings. The Colonial Georgian plan homestead is enhanced with a fusion of Italianate stylistic motifs.
Ingleby station was the principal homestead of the extensive pastoral empire, founded in 1842 by noted pioneer George Armytage, and considerably developed by successive generations of this distinguished family. Ingleby homestead and station buildings form an important and intact pastoral complex. The utilitarian buildings, and particularly the impressive T-plan woolshed, are unusually and uniformly decorated with reduced classical pediments and urns. The complex is an impressive example of homestead architecture.
Ingleby homestead and station buildings are well maintained and intact. The original stone homestead now stands in ruins.
