Statement of Significance

The Leongatha Butter and Cheese Factory Company building is historically significant at a regional level. It was erected in 1905 of brick with a simple T-shaped gable roof of corrugated iron. Built on an historic and prominent site once the home of the Leongatha Labour Colony's Lavender Farm the factory was the centre of the local milk processing industry until the new plant was erected behind the old in 1948.
Leongatha Butter and Cheese Factory Company (now Murray Golbourn Cooperative) is one of the few Gippsland factories to remain continuously trading from its inception until the present day and the site has been continuously occupied since 1905. As the centre of Murray Golbourn's operations in Gippsland it retains its commercial significance whilst the fact that the building has been retained on site adds to its cultural and heritage significance. The 1905 building is still an integral part of the processing site and is a visually conspicuous reminder of the earlier days of the dariying industry.
