Statement of Significance

This small brick and timber dairy built between 1929-1930 is located on the site of the first dairy factory in the Wooryal Shire and is notable as one of the few small dairy industry buildings remaining in West Gippsland. Like many of its neighbouring dairy factories Tarwin Lower underwent many ownership changes indicative of the struggles local farmers had in controlling their produce. The typical dairy roof-line contains ridge ventialtion. The simple lines of the building and well constructed cellar, shuttered windows and delivery doors enables the fabric of the building to contribute to the history of dairying in Gippsland. Erected on the outskirts of the town on a major road intersection the building contributes to the townscape and indicates the importance of location and transport to the dairying industry.
