Statement of Significance

The former Avoca Mail Printing Office, which was built in 1856 as a Wesleyan Church, extended in 1861/62 as a cordial factory and converted into a printing office shopfront in c1865, is architecturally and historically significant at a local level.
The Wesleyan Church section is historically significant as one of the oldest buildings in the township. The building has a strong association with the Avoca Mail, which occupied the site from 1865, and for over one hundred years was one of the most influential institutions in the Shire.
Architecturally, the front section is significant for including a relatively intact and rare 1860s shopfront. The prominent form of the building makes it an integral element of Avoca's main streetscape.
