Statement of Significance

A two-storey building in Classical Revival style erected 1879/80 from a standard Works Department design, in which an arcaded front section with pediment and clock forms a balcony to residential rooms of second story: one of only four remaining in 1973.
Construction of the Port Fairy Post Office began in May 1880, the contractor being James Kennedy. Architect George Watson of the Public Works Department designed the structure which is in a Conservative Classical Revival Style. The building contained a residence and was substantially added to in 1889, whilst the entrance arcade was closed in 1918.
The double-storey Port Fairy Post Office occupies a prominent site in the heart of Port Fairy and forms an important group with 'Seacombe House' opposite and the A.N.Z. Bank (former Bank of Australasia) on the other side of Sackville Street. The building is symmetrical and has a projecting single-storied section in front of a two storey main block. There is a pediment with clock above the twin former arcaded openings, now filled in. Typical details of this form of building include the stone plinth, impost, door and window surrounds and the parapet detailing to the single storied section.
The chimneys are prominent. This building was recently restored.
The Port Fairy Post Office is one of the first Post Offices in the State with the upper floor set back behind an open entrance arcade.
