The Mortlake Flour Mill was established by George Bostock in 1856 as a three storey squared rubble bluestone structure of utilitarian design. In 1857 Warrnambool builders Aikman, Hamilton and Geddes purchased the wind-powered mill, installed a steam engine and erected the impressive square plan stone chimney. The firm continued operation as millers and building contractors until 1870, when the partnership dissolved leaving Aikman sole proprietor.
The Mortlake Steam Flour Mill was an important district establishment, being the largest and most complete in that region of western Victoria. The bluestone mill structure, although dilapidated, is a notable early industrial structure with the finely proportioned and constructed stone chimney of particular interest. Aikman, Hamilton and Geddes were a notable building firm which undertook many substantial contracts in the 1860s with Alexander Hamilton eventually establishing an architectural practice at Coalc in 1870.
The Mortlake Steam Flour Mill building is in a dilapidated state and virtually abandoned. Part of the rear skillion structure has been demolished. The chimney is intact and in excellent repair.
