Statement of Significance

Rosebank near the Tower Hill craters, was erected in stages, firstly as a stone cottage c. 1852-60, with later substantial additions after 1881. Both stages were built for self-improved Scottish labourer David McLaws who arrived at Port Fairy in 1843. The house is a single storey stucco rendered stone house with verandah in the conservative classical style.
Rosebank is a distinctive conservative classical style residence erected in the 1880's and having a close stylistic relationship with the architecture of Warrnambool architects George Jobbins and James McLeod. Rosebank was for thirty years the home of noted settler David McLaws (1852-82) and from 1890-1968 the substantial house was owned by the O'Brien family. The stucco ornament, cast iron work and barge boards are distinctive features.
Rosebank is kept in near original condition with all the essential stucco mouldings and decorative features intact.
