Statement of Significance

Eeyeuk, near Noorat, is a pastoral run established by Dr MacFarlane and sold in 1867 to Colac district pioneer Alexander Dennis of Tarndwarncoort. Sons Alexander and Richard Dennis leased the run and in 1874 Alexander(Jnr) engaged Colac architect Alexander Hamilton to design a substantial two-storey homestead with slate roof and single storey veranda. Martin and Heard, Geelong contractors, erected the conservative Italianate style house from locally quarried half coursed basalt.
Eeyeuk, is of considerably historical importance as one of two Western District pastoral runs originally established by eminent Cornish settler Alexander Dennis and still operated by the Dennis family. Eeyeuk is the first substantial commission undertaken by self-trained architect Alexander Hamilton, and the distinctive conservative Italianate style homestead is closely related to two other major homesteads also designed by Hamilton at nearby Wooriwyrite and the more distant Dennis homestead at Tarndwarncoort near Birregurra.
Eeyeuk has been preserved essentially as constructed in 1874. A single storey concrete masonry addition to the south veranda wing is the only substantial alteration. The slate roof has been replaced with concrete tiles.
