Statement of Significance

Elphinstone station building was erected for the Victorian Railways Department in 1863. It is one of only three similar buildings in the state. The original building consisted of the booking and telegraph office, passengers' waiting facilities and a small residence for the station master. It was extended in timber, but this work has now been removed. The interior plan has been significantly altered.
Elphinstone is a single storey brick building with a hipped roof, quoining and rendered window dressings with stone sills. Its timber bell cast verandah has been substantially altered.
A finely detailed polychromatic brickwork goods shed, with granite trimings, is situated at the Melbourne end of the platform. It is equipped with its own platform and hand-operated crane dating back to the opening of the line.
