Statement of Significance

The Wunghnu Mechanics' Institute was erected in 1888-1890. The architect was A McDonald of Numurkah. The building comprises a three bay storey wing (two rooms in depth) to the street with a hall behind. This is a comparatively large and intact example of a particularly distinctive Victorian building type. The rendered facade is austerely decorated, the unusual treatment of the first floor windows exhibits a naivity that is of interest. The Mechanics' Institute is a most prominent building in Wunghnu and stands as a reminder of a more prosperous past.
