Statement of Significance

A distinctive example of the Byzantine revival in twentieth century church design, virtually without parallel in Victoria. The church was built in 1912 to the design of G B Leith, and shows the influence of Robert Haddon and of the British free style in the stylized adaptation of Byzantine prototypes. It is of particular interest for its banded exterior wall treatment, pierced parapets and turrets carrying spheres. This church is a successful and impressive example of the introduction of exotic styles to church architecture in Victoria and is externally intact. The classification includes the interior.
