Statement of Significance

The former Kyneton Market building is of local architectural and historical significance. Built in 1878, possibly to the designs of a Mr Pritchard who also designed the first stage of the Shire Hall, only the first half was ever completed.
It was also not a successful market and was used for educational purposes after 1888. The interior was subdivided and large windows inserted in 1912. In 1995 it was gutted by fire. Despite these changes, the building provides evidence of one of the very few enclosed markets erected in Victoria in the 19th century. The former Castlemaine and Ballarat Markets and the Queen Victoria Market meat hall are the only other extant examples. It is also a civic landmark, contributing to the character of Kyneton as an historic town. The Market particularly contributes to the Piper Street historic area, especially the intersection with Ebden Street where it is located, since each corner is marked by an historic building. Damaged by fire February 1995.
