Statement of Significance

The Complex: A police station and court house complex of State significance as evoking the changing styles in public works arhcitecture, from the gold-era conservative classicism, to the Italian infuence under William Wardell and the Queen Anne inspired red brick public architecture of later in the 19th century.
Lockup. A bluestone lockup, built in 1861 to a design prepared by the Public Works Department under Chief Architect William Wardell, of State Significance for the historic association with the incarceration of Ned Kelly, a relationship augmented by relevant contemporary archival material and the proximity of the court house where Kelly was tried.
Court House. A bluestone court house, built from 1856 to a design by the Public Works Department under the Inspector General, Charles Pasley, of State significance as a near original and early example of the extensive and conservatively styled public building program which followed the gold rush.

Police Station & Barracks. A double-storey Police Station, built 1882-3 to the designs of the Public Works Department under the Chief Architect, Charles Barrett, of State significance as an externally complete and early example of one of two known surviving contemporary police Station and barracks buildings (from the original group of six) which were designed in this red brick palazzo form by the Public Works Department of Victoria after the cemented Italian Renaissance era of William Wardell.
