Statement of Significance

Designed by the architects Hyndman & Bates in 1889 for Judge Arthur Chomley, this timber house was sold to Jack Manton in 1956. Jack Manton was a leading art entrepreneur and he added a large picture gallery in 1979 to hang his collection, which included 68 paintings from the Heidelberg School. Jack Manton sold Dromkeen in 1972, and in 1973 the now owners, Joyce and Court Oldmeadow started a collection of original manuscripts and artwork by leading children's illustrators and authors, now known as the Court Oldmeadow Children's Literature Foundation, in the extensively altered building. The Foundation is the only one of its kind in Victoria and possibly in Australia, so it can be said to be of both State and National importance.
