Statement of Significance

A large and prominent bluestone house in the Italianate style of regional architectural and social significance because of the quality of its design, materials and workmanship as well its connection with the now demolished brewery on the site.
Catherineville was constructed of locally quarried, coursed bluestone in 1872 by contractors Shaw and Haig to the designs of architect William Pritchard, with symmetrical bay windows, hipped slate roof, eave modillions and stuccoed chimneys. In the 1880s a verandah with long stone approach steps was added to the front, and two projecting wings added at the rear.
Internally, the two main rooms have grained doors with pictorial panels and there is a vaulted ceiling over the intersection of the two main corridors.
The residual traces of the remaining walls of the brewery are part of the classification. Twentieth century additions to the house are excluded from the classification.
