Statement of Significance

Built to serve the township formed around the gold seeking activity of Tarnagulla, the cricket club grandstand, gateway and ancillary buildings, along withthe adjoining reservoir (1860), are significant reminders of this rich gold mining area's urban consolidation.
The grandstand's age is underscored by its all-timber construction, including valuable balustrades and the column detailing, and a substantial picket gateway (1878) provides a fitting entrance to both the reservoir and sports ground. The pavilion (and booths), built by Roper in 1882, is the oldest known grandstand in the state, the booths being rare survivors of what were generally flimsy structures erected by publicans and others for each sporting event.
