Loren is a two storey prefabricated iron house, possibly manufactured by John Walker of London and erected at 62 Curzon Street North Melbourne circa 1853-54. The house was moved to its present location in 1968.
Construction involves a frame of iron angles and T-sections with corner columns. Cladding is with five inch corrugated iron sheet to the walls, and a timber frame supports the internal lining. Some sashes are iron.
Loren is one of a very few examples of prefabricated iron buildings of the nineteenth century surviving in the world. It is of additional architectural note as a two storied example and is representative of the construction techniques of prefabricated dwellings of the 1840s and 1850s. Although the exact original form of the building can only be guessed, the house is substantially intact. Loren also represents an important era in the urban development of Melbourne.
Loren has been moved from its original site to the Museum, Moe.
