Statement of Significance

Browns Plains Chapel (former Common School No 821) built in 1866 is locally significant historically as a rare example of a former Common School leased, but never owned by the Education Department surviving apparently intact. Its plan dimensions are unique and its porch location a rare example of Board standard no 11. Its use of granite is also rare and a significant use of a local material. The unusual form of the ceiling is assumed to be a structural failure.
